Coloured Pencils:
There are some really nice coloured pencils about.
I like the high pigmented creamy waxy ones the best.
Prismacolor pencils are wonderful, but harder to get in Australia and New Zealand.
You can order them on-line from different Art supply shops in the U.S.A. and get them delivered.
Faber Castell Polychromos are very nice too and readily available in art supply shops downunder.
Paints
Gouache
Gouache differs from watercolour, the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much
higher, white pigment such as chalk is also
present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater
reflective qualities.Gouache lends itself to more immediate techniques than watercolor.
Watercolor (Aquarelle)
A watercolor is the medium where the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-soluble vehicle. Watercolors are usually transparent, and appear luminous because the pigments are laid down in a relatively pure form with few fillers obscuring the pigment colors
Acrylics
Often I use just cheap acrylic paints. I mostly use them for backgrounds
for "nice" work I choose Golden fluid acrylics above all other brands
Inks
Inks come in various size bottles and from many different brands.
I use them in backgrounds, so it doesn't matter too much for me which one I use, I choose them according to their colour.
Sometimes I dilute them and put them in spray/mist bottles and sometime I use the driptool to make nice dripping background effects.
Alcohol Inks are a different story, they have their own special effects and I really have only found the Tim Holtz inks available on Trademe regularly. When I find other sources I will update this info.
Gesso: is normally used as a ground on canvasses etc. but in Mixed Media Art, we can use it in different ways and the clear Gesso we can use as an in between layer as well. It's magical to me (available in white, black and clear)
Varnishes: Your choice, your preference, they come in glossy, semi glossy, satin (= matt) of course they are there to protect the finished product against the elements (air, moisture, UV)
Gels, Pastes,Fluid Mediums, special effects mediums: they are there for you to learn to play with, experiment ! In Mixed Media we love to play with those things.
